Zane Allen Stevenson, age 65, of Mount Storm, passed from this earthly life on Monday, October 5, 2020 at his home following a long illness. Born on January 25, 1955 in Whitesburg, TN, he was the son of the late Clara Pearl (Surber) Stevenson and the Clyde Hubert Stevenson of Rural Retreat, VA.
Zane was a skilled graduate apprentice in the International Brotherhood of Boilmakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths and Forgers. He was retired from Boilermakers Local #45, Richmond, VA. He earned his 35 year service pin in 2001. He thoroughly enjoyed living close to the Mount Storm Lake where he kayaked and sailed his Snark from on end to the other. Besides his talent for welding, he also enjoyed wood working, crafted knives from Damascus steel with handles made out of deer and elk horns, beaver and bear jaws that he fitted with hand stitched leather sheaths. He put his soul into tunes he could play on harmonica and liked to send echoes through the boilers at work. Zane grew up in a family of boilermakers including his Dad, four Uncles, and his brother, Dale. He passed his knowledge of the old ways, trick and secrets of his welding craft to the many apprentices working in his crews. He was known for 'thinking outside the box" and his quick wit. Zane was capable and confident problem solver on the job.
Zane is survived by his wife, Romona Lea Fries Stevenson of Mount Storm; a brother, Dale Trent Stevenson of Rural Retreat, VA; sons, Aza Dustin Stevenson and Cody Zane Stevenson; and a proud pappy of grandson, Jaxon Ray Harvey. In addition to his parents, Zane was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Brooke Stevenson Ricketts.
Zane's family extends thanks to Grant County Memorial Hospital and Grant County Hospice. The C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements which will be private.
