Wilbur Leigh Upperman, 90, of Oakland died on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on June 9, 1924 in Gleason, WV, he was the son of the late William and Dora Ruth (Wilson) Upperman. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II and was the recipient of many medals and commendations for his service to his country. Mr. Upperman was a member of the American Legion Proctor Kildow Post 71 in Oakland and Woodmen of the World. He was a Christian by faith and a member of the Deer Park Church of God of the Prophecy. He was the owner of Upperman Coal, which was involved in both deep and surface mining. He was also a dedicated farmer who loved his cows. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorene Elizabeth (Shaffer) Upperman; his children, Dolores Jane Upperman of Akron, OH, Margaret Elaine Upperman of Oakland and Eric Upperman and wife Maria of Oakland; grandchildren, Heather Smith, April DeBarr, Billy Lloyd, Vicki Wilt and husband William II, Bryson Upperman and Leighann Upperman; great grandchildren, Cree Lloyd, Kristin Wilt and William Wilt III; and a sister, Lola Jones of Danville, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mona Hebb and Faye King and a brother, Elvin Upperman. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Thursday, August 7th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday, August 8th at 2 PM. Interment will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens with military honors accorded by the US Army and the American Legion Proctor Kildow Post 71/Deer Park VFW Post 10077 combined honor guard.
