Wayne Hill Caple, loving husband, Navy veteran, and active community member, passed away at his home on August 21, 2023, at the age of 82. Born on December 8, 1940, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Kenneth Grady Caple Sr. and E. Mae (Hill) Caple.
Wayne earned an associate's degree from Baltimore City Community College and worked in Human Relations for Bendix Field Engineering. While working for Bendix, he had the opportunity to travel to many countries.
Later, Wayne made his home in Garrett County and retired after working at Deep Creek Lake State Park.
Wayne enlisted in the United States Navy on January 30, 1961, and was honorably discharged on January 29, 1967. Wayne was a member of the American Legion, the Garrett County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (GCNAACP), and St. Matthews Episcopal Church.
Wayne enjoyed bike riding, skiing, and traveling. Those who knew him will remember his sense of humor, colorful socks, love of life and the joy he got from family and friends.
Wayne will be greatly missed by his wife, Sharon (Thomas) Caple, to whom he was married on July 9, 2004; stepchildren, Keith Caple, Christine Brown and husband Chad, and David Platter and wife Pam. Wayne was a proud step-grandfather to Christopher Brown, Austin Brown and girlfriend Tiffany, Allison Brown, and Brenlee and Callen Platter. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, David Burkholder, along with many close knit Caple and Hill cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, K. Grady Caple, Jr., Phyllis Bowersox and husband Jack, Patricia Burkholder, and Ray A. Caple.
A celebration of Wayne's life will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 10 AM, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 126 E. Liberty St., Oakland, with Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating. Interment will follow on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11 AM, in the Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2101 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, where military honors will be accorded.
