Walter Skeweris

Walter Richard "Pal" Skeweris, 83, of Oakland died on Friday, August 31, 2012 at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, WV. Born on November 8, 1928 in New Brunswick, NJ, he was the son of the late James and Josephine (Repetsky) Skeweris, both direct descendants of Lithuania. He attended Thomas High School until 1945, when he enlisted in the United States Army for which he served until 1947 when he was honorably discharged. He then worked for General Motors in Baltimore until the early 1950's at which time he became, for several years, a beer distributor for Black Label. He later worked for Island Creek Coal where he retired with 32 years of service and was a proud member and officer of the VMWA. After retirement, his oldest son, Rich started Backbone Mtn. Sport Shop in 1988 and Pal continued to work there until his death. He was a member of the VMWA, Elks, American Legion and the Ruffed Grouse Society. He is survived by his wife, Juanita "Chick" (Lewis) Skeweris; one daughter, Cathy Sanders and husband Don and three sons, Rich and wife Vicki, Rob, and Randall and wife Missie, all of Oakland; seven grandchildren; two special grandpuppies, Jake and Axle; seven great grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger, in 1987 and a brother, Isadore in 2008. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Monday, September 3rd from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 PM and at the Fairview Church of the Brethren, 1101 Fairview Church Rd., Oakland on Tuesday, September 4th from 10 to 11 AM at which time a funeral service will be held with Rev. Sam Moon officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.
