Virginia Florence Poling, 87 of Oakland, MD died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home.
Born December 24, 1922 in Freeport, WV she was the daughter of the late Ray "Simon" and Mamie (Nine) Cogley. She was also preceded in death by her husband Herman E. Poling; by brothers, John, Franklin and James Cogley.
Mrs. Poling was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church where she served as Acolyte Mother, Choir Mother and was a member of the Ladies' Auxilary. She was a founding member and volunteer of the church's Nearly New Shop.
She enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, fishing and bingo. As the oldest child in a large family, Virginia helped raise her 10 brothers and sister, five children, 35 grandchildren and was a positive influence on numerous non-family children through her volunteer service at her church and the community. Virginia was truly loved and will be missed by many.
She is survived by one son, Edward Poling of Harrisburg, PA; four daughters, Barbara Cassidy and husband David of York, PA, Mamie Reckart and husband Elmer of Crellin, Virginia Miller and husband Mike of Fountain, CO, Sandra Tasker and husband Randy of Crellin; four brothers, Ellis, Clarence, Joseph and Simon Cogley; three sisters, Frances Coddington, Delores Reiner and Linda Lipscomb; 10 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. Second St., Oakland, MD on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2010 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in her name to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or to the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home Activities Department.
