Thelma (Steyer) White, 94, of Olney died peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Olney. Born on January 13, 1918 in Steyer, she was the second child of the late Virgil Thomas and Nellie (Grim) Steyer. She was a graduate of Bayard High School in West Virginia and West Virginia Weslyan College in Buckhannon. She received her Maryland teaching certification from Frostburg State Teacher's College and taught in the Garrett County elementary schools for more than 15 years before retiring in 1972. Thelma and her late husband were faithful members of the White United Methodist Church in Ryan's Glade. She enjoyed reading, needlework, painting and bowling. She is survived by one daughter, Betty (White) Van Slycke of Olney; two sons, Daniel L. White, Jr. of Baltimore and George T. White, Sr. of Kernersville, NC; seven grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Daniel Lester White, Sr.; one son, Gerald Roger White; one sister, Virginia (Steyer) Anderson; and three brothers, Chester Steyer, Paul Steyer, and Virgil Steyer, Jr. Family and friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, October 26th from 4 to7 PM and on Saturday, October 27th at the White United Methodist Church from 11 AM to 12 Noon at which time a funeral service will be held with Rev. Barbara Rexrode officiating. Interment will follow in the White Church Cemetery. Following the service, there will be a fellowship meal in the Ryan's Glade Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Church Cemetery, c/o Dennis Riley, 3328 White Church Steyer Rd., Oakland, MD 21550.
