Sybilla Sharps

September 28, 1921 — September 21, 2017

Sybilla Jane (Paynter) Sharps, 95, of Rockville and formerly of Oakland, died on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at The Village at Rockville.  Born on September 28, 1921 in Salisbury, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Carl Marshall and Sara Elizabeth (Yeager) Paynter.  Mrs. Sharps was a graduate of Wicomico High School who went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts from Duke University.  She was a teacher of both English and French for Oakland High School and, later, a substitute teacher at Southern High School and an assistant librarian for the Ruth Enlow Library.  She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bethesda and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Oakland, where she served on the church council.  She was co-founder of Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library and served on the Board of Directors for the Ruth Enlow Library.  Mrs. Sharps was also an active member of the AAUW.  In addition to spending time with her family, she enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, knitting and, in her later years, became an avid Washington Nationals baseball fan.  She is survived by three children, Robert Sharps of Oakland, Elizabeth Morris of Elkridge and David Sharps and wife Sarah of Brooklyn, NY; five grandchildren, Rob Sharps and wife Pam, Preston Sharps and wife Ann, Elliott Morris, Dalia Sharps and Sophie Sharps; great grandchildren, Alec Sharps, William Sharps, Bryan Sharps, Thomas Sharps, Nick Sharps and wife Tasha, Matt Damanski; and great-great grandchildren, Sam Sharps, Carter and Will Damanski. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Preston Paynter, her husband, William Edward Sharps and a daughter in law, Maureen Sharps.  Friends will be received at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 7730 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, from 10 to 11 AM at which time a funeral service will be held with Pastor Derek Solberg officiating.  A reception will follow.  Friends will also be received at the C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, from 10 to 11 AM. A graveside service will be held at Garrett County Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 11:30 AM with Pastor Richard Seaks officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of Ruth Enlow Library, 6 N 2nd St., Oakland, MD 21550 or to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 7730 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda, MD 20817.
