Sherman "Skip" Harold Shockey, Jr., 72, of Oakland, passed away on July 4, 2023, at his home. Born on November 2, 1950, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Sherman Harold Shockey Sr. and Gloria Jean (Giles) Wilfong.
Skip attended Southern Garrett High School, and at age 16, left school to work on the family farm. He worked for Marcore in Baltimore as a burner for demolitions. Skip enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycles, and working on model cars. He was very skilled with his hands and could fix just about anything. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie (Ervin) Shockey; five children, Steven Shockey and wife Allison of Mtn. Lake Park, Heather Bonner of Oakland, Jeremy Shockey and wife Heather of Phoenix, AZ, Rolanda Fitzwater and husband Jack of Oakland, and Maranda Jeffreys and husband Ben of Terra Alta; eleven grandchildren, Amelia, Branson, Cordell, Bailey, Josie, Lindsey, Nevaeh, Serenity, JJ, Beretta, and Bentley; nine siblings, Sharon Long, Bill Shockey and wife Vicki, Becky Wingrove and husband Clarence, Debbie Corby and husband Jeff, Pat Benzime, Toni, Carolyn, JR., and Jeff; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Shockey; a grandson, Xander Shockey; and a brother, Richard Shockey.
Friends will be received on Saturday, July 8, 2023, from 5 to 7 PM at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. Second St., Oakland. A funeral service will be conducted at 7 PM in the funeral home with Pastor Brian Detrick officiating.
