Ruby Miller

March 26, 1918 — July 13, 2014

Ruby Mildred (Nine) Miller, 96, of Silver Spring, formerly of Oakland died on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at her residence. Born on March 26, 1918 in Garrett County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Franklin and Claudie Elnora (Baxley) Nine. She enjoyed learning about plants and animals as a small child and by all accounts, she was an eager learner, gaining knowledge about nature while helping with chores around the farm. Ruby enjoyed her elementary and high school days. She was always an active member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren, where many religious and social events occurred. She loved church camp where she made lifelong friends. As a young adult, Ruby moved to Silver Spring for employment. She married Harold Eugene Miller in 1939 in the home where she was raised and together they had four sons. Ruby was interested in arts and crafts and was a skilled seamstress, often making finely tailored clothes or slipcovers. She picked up the skill of quilt making from her mother's example. Using her sewing prowess, she set out to make each of her grandchildren a quilt, she kept track of the colors each child liked and presented a lovely quilt to each of them. What a lovely keepsake and an ambitious project that was! Ruby and her husband enjoyed their Garrett County farm in summers for many years while she worked as a cafeteria manager for the Montgomery County Schools and he worked in Washington, DC for the naval gun factory and later as an instructor at Catholic University. Once they both retired, they spent spring through fall back at the farm and spent winters in Okeechobee, FL. Ruby had always been known as a friendly and generous person; she truly never met a stranger. She and her husband enjoyed entertaining friends and literally had an open-door-come-anytime policy; they were a gracious couple. She had a green thumb for raising and harvesting vegetables and, alongside her husband, worked tirelessly in the garden. She was known for being able to whip up soups in a jiffy and was a great baker. Many a person enjoyed a scrumptious meal at the Miller's. Above all, Ruby loved her family, her parents, her sisters and brothers; her children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces were always very dear to her. She is survived by four sons, Frank Miller and wife Diana of Clarksville, MD, Ronald Miller and wife Barbara of Rathdrum, ID, Harold J. Miller and wife Grace A. Ross of Riverview, FL and Oakland, MD and Bruce "Teddy" Miller and wife Brenda of Lihue, Kauai, HI; grandchildren, Kathleen Lundeen and husband Brett, Pamela Jose and husband Robert, Sheryl Faddis, Candy Cotton, Gregg Miller and wife Joni, Ronald Miller, Jr., Dr. Brian Miller and wife Kasi, Andrew Miller and wife Huong, Michele Miller and partner Danny Munez, Stephanie Gordon, Deborah Miller, and James "Jimmy" Miller and wife Shannon; great grandchildren, Sophia, Christopher, Claudia, Jimmy, Samuel, Tabetha, Alicia, Blair, Brent, Brandi, Brandin, Garrett, Hannah, Ronald III, Rebecca, Payton, Bennett, Danielle and Nicole; a number of great great grandchildren; a sister in law, Helen (Bachtel) Nine; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Eugene Miller, in 1997; two brothers, Elmer and Robert; and five sisters, Gladys, Elsie, Hazel, Naomi and Ruth. Ruby was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Thursday, July 17th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 18th in the funeral home at 11 AM with Rev. Donald Matthews officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fairview Church of the Brethren, c/o 81 Althouse Hill Rd., Oakland, MD 21550.
