Ronnie Lee Skidmore, 61, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and friend, went to his eternal home on Friday, November 5, 2010.
Born December 12, 1948 in Grove City, PA, he was the youngest son of the late Russell Patrick Skidmore and Gladys Pearl (Gibson) Skidmore, formerly of Webster Springs, WV. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Eva (Skidmore) Landon.
Ronnie retired as a Staff Sergeant from the United States Army in 1988 after a distinguished 20 year career. He was a decorated Vietnam combat Veteran and loved to tell stories about the many years he served in Germany and around the world. After retiring, he returned to Garrett County and helped with the development of the Cellular One business in Oakland, MD. He enjoyed his retirement and often told people that he was a treasure hunter, because he enjoyed yard sales and gun shows. He resided in Pleasant Valley and after a long illness was happy to come home to hear the roosters crow on the farm.
Ronnie was a member of the Deer Park VFW Post 10077 and of the Oakland American Legion Post 71. He was also a Mason and a member of the Lebanon Lodge Shrine of Augsbug, Germany. He was active in his community, volunteering his time when able with the Brown Bag Food Program and had previously served on the Community Action Board of Directors for several years. Ronnie loved deer hunting and had many interesting stories of his adventure.
Ronnie is survived by his wife of 43 years, Darlene (Harvey) Skidmore; one son, John Tilden Skidmore, of Chantilly, VA; one daughter, Senior Master Sergeant Lori (Skidmore) Kelly (US Air Force), of Alexandria, VA; one grandson, Matthew Anthony Carrillo (age 11), of Alexandra, VA; two brothers, Patrick Dale Skidmore, of Webster Springs, WV and Russell Skidmore of Newport News, VA; two sisters, Hazel (Skidmore) Nazelrod of Newport News, VA and Sheila Skidmore, of Newsports News, VA; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
At Ronnie's request his body was cremated. Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A. 21, North Second Street, Oakland, MD, Saturday, November 13, 2010 from 1-2 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
Military honors will be accorded by the Deer Park VFW and the Oakland American Legion Post.
