Phyllis Friend

Phyllis Lorraine (Murphy) Friend, 73, of Swanton, died on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Ruby Memorial Hospital.  Born on July 6, 1944, she is the daughter of the late Lawrence E. and Beulah L. (Snell) Murphy.  Phyllis was a graduate of Elk Garden High School.  She was a member of Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church where she participated in the Women's Group.  Phyllis was dedicated to her community and she was long standing active member of the Swanton Community Center.  Whether she was organizing events, cooking for dinners or volunteering for whatever needed to be done, Phyllis was a loving fixture at the Center.  She was a wonderful loving Mom, Grandma and great Grandma and she will be truly missed.  Phyllis is survived by her sons, Chester E. Friend and Gerald E. Friend, Jr.; grandchildren, Michael Haggerty, Destiny Friend, Harlee Friend and Jacob Friend; four great grandchildren, Axel Haggerty,  Annabella Grace Haggerty, Joel Winebrenner and Caiden Nelson; two brothers, Floyd Murphy and wife Gloria, Dewaine Murphy and wife Faye; a sister, Leora Lemon; and a number of nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald E. Friend, Sr. in February 2014; two brothers and two sisters.  Friends will be received at the C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 5-8 PM.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 11 AM at Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church, 3443 Swanton Road, Swanton with Pastors Carl Lee and Barbara Rexroad officiating.  Interment will be in George Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church, 451 Upper Green Glade Road, Swanton, MD 21561 or to the Swanton Community Center, 3335 Swanton Road, Swanton, MD 21561.  Condolences for the family may be left at www.csfredlockfh.com.
