Paul Shockey

Paul Richard Shockey, 83, of Mountain Lake Park, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017 at his home.  Born on April 7, 1934 in Pocahontas, Greenville Twp., PA, he was the son of the late Marling and Alice Geiger Shockey.  A 1952 graduate of Meyersdale High School he was a highly recognized football player and was recruited to attend and play football at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH where he graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration.  Paul was employed by United Airlines and became president of the nation’s largest air transport union, Local 846 of the International Association of Machinists, prior to working in several cargo and customer service management positions in Cleveland, Philadelphia and Baltimore.  He was later employed as the Garrett County Roads Administrator for 11 years and was the vice-president of Team One GM Automotive Dealership in Oakland and the broker of Triple “S” Real Estate Holdings, LLC.  Paul was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Southern Garrett Athletic Association in 1993 and was elected to the Southern High School Football Hall of Fame in 2003.  A long-time resident of Mountain Lake Park, Paul was elected mayor in 2000.  He was a life member of the Baldwin-Wallace College Alumni Athletic Lettermen’s Association, a charter member and past president of the Little Meadows Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, a member and past president of the Oakland, Mt. Lake Park and Deep Creek Lions Club and served as a zone and region chairman in District 22-W.  He was named a “Melvin Jones Fellow” in 2008 representing Lions International highest recognition for humanitarian service.  He was the chairman of the Lions Autumn Glory 5K Run for Sight from its inception in 1993 until 2008 and continued to serve on the race committee. Paul was also a member of The Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church at Deep Creek Lake. He enjoyed biking with his wife on the Allegheny Highland Trail, spending winters in Palm Springs, CA, most recently, Bradenton, FL and spending time with his family at “Shockey Top” a family retreat in Preston County, WV.  Paul is survived by his wife, Sue (Hatfield) Shockey; a sister, Carole Thomassey of Greensburg, PA; his children, Stephen Shockey and wife Kerry, Gregory Shockey and wife Susan, all of Oakland, Susan C. (Shockey) Bone of Brandon, FL; step children, Michael Hillen and wife Susan of Oakland, Jenifer (Hillen) Grant of Santa Monica, CA, James Hillen and wife Darlene, Amy Hillen, Dave Hillen and wife Karen; grandchildren, Allison and Caitlin Bone, Daniel Shockey; step grandchildren, Karl Hillen and wife Tiara, Nicholas Hillen and wife Haley and Nina Hillen, Alexis Arbogast, William Grant, Steve Shaffer and wife Amanda, Renee Lantz and husband Ben, Woody Hillen, Alexandra Hillen, Max Keepers, Noah Lewis, Jacob, Josh and Tiffany Hillen; and eight great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step grandson, Vincent C. Hillen and a sister, Bettylu Miller.  Friends and family are invited to participate in a celebration of Paul’s life held on Monday, December 11, 2017 from 4-7:00 PM at Uno’s Restaurant, Honi location, 19745 Garrett Hwy, Oakland.
