Paul Eugene Shaffer, 88, of Deer Park went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 17, 2016, at his home. Born on September 11, 1927, in Oakland, he was the son of the late James M. and Bertha S. (Harvey) Shaffer. He was a veteran of both the United States Navy having served during World War II and the United States Coast Guard serving during the Korean War. After his Navy service and prior to enlisting in the Coast Guard, he returned home to finish high school as did so many young men in the area at the time. Paul worked for Columbia Gas for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Faith Evangelical Free Church and, loving music, had spent many years singing in the choir. He liked to "tinker" and had many interests including beekeeping, ham radio, photography and building violins. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Elizabeth Shaffer; a daughter, Linda Fike and husband Emerson "Buck" of Oakland; two grandsons, Chad Fike and wife Crystal of Oakland and Ryan Fike and girlfriend Angela Casper of Chicago, IL; a sister, Lorene Upperman of Oakland; cousin and friend, Paul Harvey and wife Mildred of Oakland; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Shaffer; a sister in law, Margaret Shaffer; and a brother in law, Wilbur Upperman. A funeral service will be held in the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Monday, June 20th at 11 AM with Pastor Jeff Kroll officiating. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service. Interment, with military honors, will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.
