Norma Elenor Gnegy, 89, of Oakland, MD, passed away peacefully, October 14, 2021, at her home. She became an angel of the Lord while holding her family's hands. Born on December 28, 1931, in Red House, she was the daughter of the late Russel Paul and Bernice Roberta (Cook) Roth.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lorraine Gnegy; two sons, David Gnegy and wife, Margaret and Steve Gnegy; two daughters, Patricia Hinebaugh and husband Jeff, and Pamela Sharps and husband Rob; brother, John Roth; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, and Andrew Gnegy, Derek and Logan Hinebaugh, and Alec, Will, Bryan, and Tommy Sharps; and numerous nieces and nephews.
After high school, Norma attended nursing school at Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Cumberland, MD. She was one of the first nurses to walk through the doors of Garrett Memorial Hospital in 1951, where she worked for 46 years. She married her sweetheart on June 26, 1955, and they remained lifelong sweethearts. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church where she was a founding member of Lutheran League (Youth Fellowship), Ladies Circle and taught Bible School. In addition, she served as the chaplain of the Women's Auxiliary American Legion Post #71. She was always very involved in her children's activities including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H and sporting events. Norma truly enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, painting, cooking and other crafts. More than anything, she looked forward to the holidays when the entire family was gathered together.
A special thanks to her caregivers: Amanda Louie, Lidda Beaman, Betty Steyer, Lora Bolyard, Bonnie Reightler, the Schlabach family, Regina Peachy and Dr. Margaret Kaiser.
