Nina Callis

Nina Elizabeth (Bernard) Callis, 92, of Oakland died on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home. Born on May 2, 1921 in Oakland, she was the daughter of the late Lee McComas and Nellie (Lantz) Bernard. She had worked in retail sales for both Sandy's Levis & Lace and The Clothing Warehouse in Oakland. Nina had been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department for fifty years and was longest living member of the Deer Park Homemaker's Club. In addition to spending time with her family, she enjoyed painting, ceramics and making crafts, especially woodworking. She was also known for her great love of flowers. She is survived by four sons, Carl Richard Callis and wife Margaret Susan of Newport, TN, Donald Lester Callis and wife Eleanor of Oakland, Kevin Eugene Callis of Oakland and Bryan Frederick Callis and wife Joni of Oakland; grandchildren, Leland M. Callis, Sean Richard Callis, Lori R. Soenksen, Jacqueline L. Mousch and Devin Garrett Callis; great grandchildren, Daniel, Emily, Allison, Andrew, Megan, Johnny, Joe, Patrick and Bently; a sister, Eloise Welling of Mt. Lake Park; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lester Callis, in 2005; sisters, Lucille (Bernard) Liller and Mabel (Bernard) Martin; and brothers, Lee M. Bernard and William Bernard. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Tuesday, April 1st from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, April 2nd at 11 AM with Pastor Jeff Kroll officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 3152, Deer Park, MD 21550 or a charity of one's choice.
