Neil Wolfe

Neil Donald Wolfe, 94, of Mountain Lake Park died on an undetermined date in late July or early August, 2018, of natural causes. His body was found on August 11th in Allegheny County, PA. Born on March 30, 1924, in Red House, he was the son of the late Cyrus Sylvester and Tola A.D. (Hahn) Wolfe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Friend Baker Wolfe; his daughter, Charlotte K. Baker; and his son, Jeffery L. Wolfe.

He is survived by two sons, Paul H. Baker and wife Bonnie of Winchester, VA and Gary W. Wolfe and wife Lisa of Augusta, WV; a brother, Orville Wolfe of Richmond, VA; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, wife and children, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, Kenneth, Paul and Franklin Wolfe; and eight sisters, Virginia, Lois and Thelma Wolfe, Melvina Toms, Evelyn Myers, Pearl Kessler, Mary Shaw, Blanche Miller.

Neil graduated from Oakland High School in 1941 and went to work at the War Department in Washington, D.C. before being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II during which he was deployed to the Philippines in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Garrett County where he worked at Southern States and Beachy Lumber. In 1952, he met and married the love of his life, Margaret Friend Baker, widow of Ralph Baker. They enjoyed a robust life and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002 at Deep Creek Lake. After their marriage, he accepted a job offer with the newly formed Central Intelligence Agency in 1954. He was on the forefront of digital technology working as a computer programmer on sensitive collection programs. He retired from the CIA in 1974 and returned to Garrett County where he established a thriving wood-working shop repairing antiques and building custom furniture. He also did work for various churches in the County as well as for the Historical Society.

He loved his Garrett County and often took drives through Pleasant Valley and north to Deep Creek Lake and Friendsville enjoying the scenic landscape of his favorite place.

Family and friends will be received at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Red House on Friday, August 17, 2018, at 10 AM with a funeral service immediately afterwards at 11 AM. Interment will take place in the Red House Lutheran Cemetery. The C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church at 3301 Garrett Highway, Oakland, Maryland, 21550.
