Nancy K. Learey, 81, of Oakland passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on April 25, 1934 in Ambler, PA, she was a daughter of the late George B. and Florence M. (Layfield) Kemmerer. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Western Maryland College and completed her Master's degree at West Virginia University. Nancy was a music teacher for Southern High School and a guidance counselor at Southern Middle School for the Garrett County Board of Education until retirement and was a mother to many. She was a long-time member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where she was director of the choir for many years, Mt. Laurel Garden Club and the Junior Women's Civic Club. She proudly founded the Garrett Choral Society, for whom she served as director for 28 years. Nancy was honored by the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival as a recipient of the Harry Kight Outstanding Contributions to the Arts Award and was inducted into the Garrett County Women's Hall of Fame in 2014. She is survived by two step-children, Chloe Learey of Vermont and Frederick Learey of Allentown, PA; children, Marta Turney of Silver Spring, Michele Messenger of Morgantown, WV, Brantley Turney of Boulder, Colorado and Kurk Turney of Harper's Ferry, WV; eleven grandchildren; three sisters, Joan Thomas of Florida, Ellen Warren of Tennessee and Carol Clement of Rockville; and two brothers, George Kemmerer of California and Jim Kemmerer of Arkansas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Frederick K. Learey, on January 18, 2015. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Tuesday, May 12th from 5 to 7 PM. According to her wishes, Nancy will then be cremated and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 1:30 PM in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 6 S 2nd St., Oakland with Pastor C. Scott Robinson and Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating. In honor of Nancy, the Garrett Choral Society will be performing several of her favorite pieces.
