Michael Hinebaugh

April 26, 1952 — January 19, 2019

Oakland

Michael “Mike” Linn Hinebaugh, 66, Oakland, MD, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at his home surrounded by family. Mike died following a short but courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Born on April 26, 1952, in Oakland, MD, he was the son of the late James “Jim” C. Hinebaugh, Sr. and Adra M. (Reams) Hinebaugh of Oakland.

Mike is survived by his two daughters, Jessica M. Begley and husband Kevin (Reisterstown) and Kristi L. Hinebaugh (Oakland), and their mother Susan (Dombrowsky) Hinebaugh (Liverpool, NY); his mother Adra M. Hinebaugh (Oakland); three brothers, Jim Hinebaugh, Jr. and wife Barbara (Oakland), Dave Hinebaugh (Oakland), and Jeff Hinebaugh and wife Patty (Oakland); grandson Theodore (Teddy) Begley; and eight nephews and nieces.

Mike grew up on a small farm in the Swallow Falls area and lived there his entire life. He was truly a “jack of all trades.” He was self-employed in the excavating and construction fields for most of his working life. Mike was an accomplished heavy equipment operator and a skilled carpenter. He was self-taught having learned many of his skills while helping older, experienced craftsmen. He built the home his daughters were raised in and enjoyed making gifts for the children in his extended family. At the time of his diagnosis, Mike was working in maintenance at Taylor Made Vacations where he enjoyed mentoring the younger employees and sharing some of his trademark “tricks” - shortcuts saving time and energy.

Mike’s hobbies included working in his garden, watching the Dallas Cowboys, mowing his huge yard, tinkering in his shop, playing gin rummy and setback, cutting firewood, playing with his dog Dixie, and spending time with his friends telling stories. He was well known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Mike’s bond with his grandson, Teddy, was a joy to behold. They both lit up in each other’s company.

Mike was a life member of Elks Lodge #2481 in Oakland, a member of the Deer Park Sportsmen’s Club where he served as President for several years, and a member of the Sons of The American Legion Post #71 in Oakland.

Friends will be received at the C&S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland, from 10am to 12pm on Saturday, January 26, 2019. A memorial service will follow from 12 to 1 pm at the funeral home where “ol’ buddies” will be offered an opportunity to tell stories.

The activities at the funeral home will be followed by a celebration and fundraiser for Mike’s family at the Oakland Elks Lodge, 527 Hamill Street at 2 pm.

Mike’s family request that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be directed to the Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550, and Cindy’s Fund, PO Box 182, Oakland, MD 21550.
