Melvin E. Smith, Sr., 71, of Oakland, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at his residence. Born on February 10, 1946 in Cherry Creek, WV, he was the son of the late Dorothy M. Smith. Melvin graduated from Elk Garden High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Over the years he was employed as a salesman or in sales management. He spent several years working for Naylor’s Hardware and also for C & M Lawn Care in Florida. Melvin took pride in being a great chef. He enjoyed physical activity and working out at the gym. In his quiet time, he loved watching NASCAR racing and the Oregon Ducks college football. Melvin is survived by his bride of 35 years Helen F. Smith; his children, Melvin E. Smith, Jr. and wife Kim of Oakland, Brian R. Smith and friend Joanne of Bittinger; a step-daughter, Brandi Anderson and husband Will of Deer Park; grandchildren, Jonathon Smith, Carrisa Offhaus, Crystal Sisler and husband Daniel and Blake Smith; great grandchildren, Sarah and Charlie Offhaus, Landon, Alivia and Julia Sisler, Elias Dale, Brennan, Brayen and Andy Anderson; a brother, Leroy; all of his cats and his dog, Maya. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elva. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 5-8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 11 AM with Pastor Mark Weeks officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Kalbaugh Cemetery, Elk Garden. The family would like to thank Officer Nick Dudok for spending time with the family at Melvin’s house on Thursday night.
