Melvin Beckman

Melvin Rudolph Beckman, 89, of Swanton, passed away on January 8, 2025, at his residence. Born on August 20, 1935, in North Glade, he was the son of the late Rudolph and Margaret (Friend) Beckman.

After attending the Oakland High School, he worked for the Beryl Woodyard of Westvaco for over 41 years, retiring in 1997. He also worked with his father, Rudolph, on their farm throughout his life. He was a member of the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church, the NRA, and Woodmen of the World. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, caring for his lawn, crossword puzzles, assembling puzzles and playing cards. Melvin was the caretaker of Rose Hill Cemetery for over 50 years and was an overseer and trustee for over 30 years.

He is survived by his two sons, Melvin Leslie Beckman and wife Tracy of Adams, TN and Andrew Scott Beckman of North Glade; his grandson, Anthony W. Beckman and wife Melina of Adams, TN; his great grandson, Alex "Beeps" Beckman; his siblings, Marvin E. Beckman and wife Ruth Ann of North Glade and Margaret "Peggy" (Beckman) Friend of Warren, OH; and two nephews, Simon Harvey and Stuart Harvey, and their families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy "Dottie" (Friend) Beckman; two siblings, Mildred (Beckman) Harvey and husband Paul and Tryphina Beckman, an infant brother; a brother in law, Harold G. Friend; and nieces and nephews, Sherman Harvey, Randall Friend, and Carolyn Friend.

Melvin's request for cremation was honored. A celebration of life will be held on on March 8, 2025, at 1 PM in the Swanton United Otterbein Church with Rev. Tom Matthews officiating.
