Maxine Gibson

October 23, 1917 — June 19, 2016

Maxine Leisle (Lyons) Gibson, 98, of Oakland, passed away, surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday, June 19, 2016, at the Dennett Road Manor. Born on October 23, 1917 in Newburg, WV, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Nona (Wolfe) Lyons. Maxine was raised in Newburg, about which she told beloved, colorful stories. She graduated as salutatorian from Kingwood High School, and attended New River State College (now WVU Tech) in Montgomery, WV. During World War II, she worked with the war department in Norfolk, VA and in Baltimore, MD in various secretarial capacities. After the war, she and her husband, Dr. H. Robert Gibson, settled in Oakland, MD. She always loved lakes and after his death, she moved full-time to their summer cottage at Deep Creek Lake. Known as "Nanny" to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all their friends, she was more than a homemaker. She was also an expert seamstress and her talent as a pianist is well-known. Family and friends of all generations often spent hours gathered around her piano singing favorite songs from the 30's and 40's. Her love of the lake and music has traveled through her family's four generations. Maxine is survived by her children, Susan Skinner and husband John of Charles Town, WV, Jim Gibson and wife Kathy of Deep Creek Lake, Anne Robinson and husband Bob of Wheeling, WV, Jane Helmick and husband John of Oakland, and Mary Lynn Bosley and husband Jim of Oakland; grandchildren, Stephen Skinner, Andrew Skinner, Sally Skinner, Todd Gibson, Beau Gibson, Jim Robinson, Roberta Olejasz, Jamie Bosley, and Cory Bosley; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Austin, Carmen and Addison Skinner, Maggie and Trixie Bredbeck, Sophie Gibson, Clark Gibson, Megan, Evan and Riley Robinson, Reagan and Max Olejasz. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H. Robert Gibson and two brothers, Clifford and Glenn Lyons. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Wednesday, June 22nd from 5 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 318 E. Oak St., Oakland on Thursday, June 23rd at 1 PM with Pastor Matthew Paugh officiating. Interment will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens. Maxine's family would like to thank the staff of Dennett Road Manor for the loving care they provided over the past few years.
