Mary Ellen (Ahl) Heugel, 99, of Oakland, formerly of Albany, NY, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Dennett Road Manor. Born at home on October 8, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Ellen (Connolly) Ahl. She graduated in 1935 from Seton High School in Baltimore and continued her education at St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg where she was a member of the graduating class of 1939 majoring in Latin and mathematics. Mary then joined the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul. She continued to serve her community while earning a Master’s in Nursing Education, Theological Studies and her PhD in Higher Education Administration. She was director of St. Catherine Laboure School of Nursing for 11 years and then assigned as Administrator of St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, NY. She left the Daughters of Charity in 1968. She later became the director of the Dorothea Hopfer School of nursing in Harlem, NY. She married in 1975 to Andrew Heugel and lived in Mt. Vernon, NY for 24 years. After her retirement she continued to volunteer and help others. In December 2014, Mary relocated to Dennett Road Manor in Oakland.  Mary is survived by her stepsons, Andrew and Edward Heugel; five step-grandchildren; a niece, Kathy Eiswert and husband Leonard of Oakland; a nephew, Richard Ahl and wife Jeanne of Littleton, CO. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Huegel in 1999; and two siblings, William Ahl and Sister Margaret Ahl, Daughter of Charity.  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Oakland on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 10:00 AM with Msgr. Paul Byrnes officiating. Mary’s family would like to thank the staff of Dennett Road Manor, Hospice of Garrett County, and her dear friends, Sheila Reams and Jane Nolan.
