Martha Jachowski

Martha (Uhland) Jachowski, 86, of Swanton, passed from this life on September 21, 2012. She was born May 17, 1926 in Columbia, Missouri to the late Russel Edward and Sarah Elizabeth (Linger) Uhland. Martha attended Coolidge High School in Chevy Chase, MD and continued her education at the University of Maryland, College Park. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the University of Iowa and a Master's Degree in Sociology from the University of Maryland. Martha worked for the Montgomery County Mental Health Association for 21 years. During her time there, she founded the Montgomery County Hotline. Martha retired to the mountains of Western Maryland in 1985 where she became an active community member and volunteer. She held the office of President in several organizations such as the Garrett County Civic Club, the American Association of University Women, and the Garrett County Lighthouse Board of Directors. She also volunteered for VIVA at Garrett County Memorial Hospital. She is survived by a son, Bryan R. Jachowski and wife Elaine and a daughter, Barbara Ann (Jachowski) Oxenham; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Jachowski, MD, James Oxenham and wife Samantha, Matthew Jachowski, Jason Jachowski and wife Allison, Joshua Jachowski, Kathryn Jachowski King and husband Pat, Joseph Oxenham, Justin Jachowski, and Sarah Jachowski; and three great grandchildren, D. Alex Oxenham, Isabella Oxenham, and Brian Shivley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Jachowski; son, Bruce R. Jachowski; brother, Homer E. (Bud) Uhland; and son in law, Robert L. Oxenham. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 10 A.M. in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 126 East Liberty Street, Oakland, MD with Reverend Chip Lee officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Garrett County Lighthouse, 20 East Oak Street, Oakland, MD 21550. Arrangements are being handled by the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland.
