Marie Smigal

Marie Smigal, age 88, a resident of Davis, passed away on Monday evening May 14, 2012 in Torrance, CA. In January of this year while visiting her daughter in San Pedro she was hospitalized unable to return home.

Marie was born January 29, 1924 in Maryland, a daughter of the late Peter and Nettie (Paugh) Novalis. She grew up in Kempton, MD. When she married Henry Smigal, a World War II Veteran, in 1947, they established a home in Davis.
Mrs. Smigal is survived by her son, John Smigal (Joyce) of Richmond, VA, daughter, Kathy Wright of San Pedro, CA, four grandchildren, John, Jared, Wesley and Shannon, and five great grandchildren, Cynthia, Devon, Jackson, Julianna, and Kaleb.
Preceding her in death was her husband Henry Smigal, son Gary Stephen Smigal, sisters Betty Lipscomb, Clara Novalis, Margaret Skotniski, and a brother, Marvin Novalis. Marie enjoyed traveling, and loved her family and the West Virginia Mountains. She loved walking in Blackwater Falls State Park and visiting with her friends at the Mountain Top Senior Center in Thomas. Her strong will to fight for recovery during her illness in California was greatly encouraged by her faith that she would soon return to her beloved home. Friends will be received from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Hinkle Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2012,with Rev. Mark Joseph officating.  Immediatley after the service a gathering to celebrate her life at the Pendleton Park Lookout at Blackwater Falls State Park. Hinkle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
