Lorraine Gay Gnegy, 93, of Oakland, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at his home. He became an angel of the Lord while holding his family's hands. Born on April 20, 1930, in Red House, he was the son of the late Dewey Elwood and Sadie Allie (Slaubaugh) Gnegy.
He is survived by two sons, David Gnegy and wife, Margaret, and Steve Gnegy; two daughters, Patricia Gnegy, and Pamela Sharps and husband Rob; brother-in-law, John Roth; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, and Andrew Gnegy, Derek and Logan Hinebaugh, and Alec, Will, Bryan, and Tommy Sharps; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Norma Elenor (Roth) Gnegy; four sisters, Ruth Arnold, Ruby Harvey, Lorene Dodge and Wilda Davy; and four brothers, Dale D. Gnegy, Harold Gnegy, Merlin Gnegy, and Darrell Gnegy.
Lorraine graduated in 1949 from Oakland High School. He was drafted in 1951 and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for two years during the Korean Conflict. During that time, he was wounded and suffered the loss of many close comrades. Much of his professional career was spent as the Parts Manager at Sharps Chevrolet. Gnegy, his nickname, was known to all and well known for his BBQ chicken at the company picnic each summer. He worked for other car dealerships upon Sharps' closing. He married his sweetheart on June 26, 1955, and they remained lifelong sweethearts. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was very involved as a member of the Council, Cemetery Committee and many more positions. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts, including earning the Silver Beaver Award, the highest-level award for distinguished service to youth. Lorraine had a wealth of friendships some developed through his membership with The Knights of Pythias and the American Legion. Lorraine truly enjoyed his grandchildren, working in the garden, mowing the yard, woodwork, and cheering on the Pirates and Steelers. More than anything, he looked forward to the holidays, when the entire family was gathered.
A special thanks to his caregivers, Amanda Louie, Liddia Beaman, Betty Steyer, Lora Bolyard, Bonnie Reightler, the Schlabach family, Regina Peachy, Taylor Crabtree and Dr. Margaret Kaiser.
