Lois Helbig

L. Barbara Helbig, 88, of Oakland died on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home. Born on January 20, 1928 in Stoystown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Otho and Verna (Lape) Friend. She had been an operator for Bell Telephone and had also, for a number of years, done clerical work at Garrett County Memorial Hospital having been there from the day the hospital opened. Of her jobs, her greatest joy was being a homemaker and taking care of her family. In addition to spending time with her husband, son and grandchildren, Barbara loved tending to her flower garden and sewing. She is survived by her son, Charles E. Helbig and wife Susan of Oakland; five grandsons; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Alden Friend and sister, Catherine (Friend) Mullen, both of California. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Laura Jackson, Eleanor Butler, Evelyn Delsignore, Cleda Paugh and Faun Gnegy; and three brothers, Samuel, Herbert and Robert Friend. A funeral service will be held at the C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Saturday, December 3rd at 11 AM. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post #71, PO Box 492, Oakland, MD 21550, VFW Post #10077, 4107 Maryland Hwy, Deer Park, MD 21550 or to a charity of one's choice.
