LaVerna D. "Cookie" Evans, a beloved member of the Oakland community, passed away on January 20, 2024, at the age of 81. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Born on June 10, 1942, Cookie was the daughter of the late Floyd H. Shaffer and Priscilla D. Bell.
Cookie dedicated her life to serving her community as a bus driver in the Garrett County Public School System for 27 years. With a warm smile and a kind disposition, she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues throughout her career. Her commitment to her profession was unparalleled, and she took great pride in ensuring the safe transportation of the children entrusted to her care. Early in her career she also was employed by Kight Insurance and J.P. Riley Gulf Oil Company.
Beyond her work, Cookie possessed a multitude of passions that brought joy and fulfillment to her life. She had a remarkable talent for cooking, delighting her family and friends with her mouthwatering creations. Whether it was a comforting casserole or a decadent dessert, Cookie's culinary skills were legendary.
In her leisure time, Cookie pursued her love for needlework, creating intricate designs and treasured crafts with her skilled hands. She found solace and creativity in this craft, leaving behind cherished pieces that will serve as reminders of her talent and passion.
Cookie had a deep connection to nature and reveled in working on the family farm. From planting crops to tending to animals, she found immense satisfaction in the toil and rewards of farm life. She shared her knowledge and love for agriculture as a dedicated 4-H Leader and served as the treasurer of the Garrett County Livestock Association. Cookie's contributions to these organizations were invaluable, leaving a lasting impact on the future generations of farmers.
Cookie is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Theodore "Ted" Evans, Sr., her adoring children, Lisa Brenneman and husband James, Teddy Evans, Jr. and wife Sherri, Craig Evans and wife Caroline; grandchildren, Stephanie Pifer and husband Wyatt, Sarah Watson and husband Matthew, Theo Evans and wife Kristin, Jonathon Evans, Trenton Evans and Mara Evans; great grandchildren, Wesley Pifer, Alannah Watson and Sadie Evans. Her presence will also be missed by her extended family and many friends.
A public visitation to celebrate Cookie's remarkable life will be held at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St, Oakland on January 25, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral and committal service will be held in the funeral home on January 26, 2024, at 11:00 am with Pastor Carl Fike officiating. Private interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
In honor of Cookie's contributions to the community, her family kindly asks for memorial donations to be made to the Red House 4-H Club, 6128 George Washington Highway, Oakland, MD 21550. Cookie's family would like to thank the staff of Dennett Road Manor for the compassionate care shown to her.
