Klaus Dieter Mielenz, 87, of Oakland, died on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on May 8, 1929 in Berlin, Germany, Klaus was the son of the late Walther and Ilse (Hassenkamp) Mielenz. He graduated from Der Freien Universitat, Berlin, Germany with his PhD in physics. He worked for several years in Germany, and later, was recruited to work for the United States Government in Washington, D.C. He retired from the Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology, after over thirty years of service. Klaus was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Our Town Theatre. He enjoyed reading, photography, gardening, woodworking, traveling and computing. Klaus is survived by his wife, Maureen Mielenz; his children, Frank Mielenz and Monica Sondberg and husband Terry; grandchildren, Morgan Mielenz, Alicia and Eric Sondberg; stepchildren, Marc Sherman and wife Gabrielle, Naomi Madsen and husband Greg, and Owen Luehrmann; step-grandchildren, Jaimie, Olivia and Emma Sherman, Olivia and Max Madsen. In addition to his parents, Klaus was preceded in death by his first wife Renate Mielenz, and a brother Hans Werner Mielenz. In accordance with Klaus's wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11 AM at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Oakland, MD. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland.
