Katherine Matthiesen, 86, of Oakland died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 after a long struggle with congestive heart failure and pulmonary disease. Kate and husband, Joe, retired to Garrett County over 25 years ago, having raised their family in the Catonsville area of Baltimore. They quickly made friends and became a part of the community by square dancing and traveling with the Mountaintop Promenaders. While in Baltimore, Katherine had been employed as a payroll administrator for Fairlanes, which was a popular national bowling alley company. She was a very talented counted-cross stitcher and earned several blue ribbons for her work at the Garrett County Fair. Her work is proudly displayed in the homes of her daughters. She was also an avid bingo player and loved nothing more than yelling "bingo" regardless of the size of the jackpot. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Joseph Matthiesen, as well as daughters, Lynne Crehan and husband Glenn of Oakland, and Nancy Grimm and husband Jim of Hampstead. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Anna of Queens, NY, and Joe of Baltimore; and a number of nieces and nephews. Katherine was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She will also be fondly remembered by special nephew, Tom and his wife Patty of Oakland. She was particularly grateful to those outside the family who helped care for her during her final illness. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sorely missed. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland on Friday, December 21st from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, December 22nd at 10 AM with Rev. Donna Lee Shogren officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad, PO Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.
