Karl Kahl

Karl Vernon Kahl, 89, of Oakland died on Monday, October 8, 2018, at his home. Born on May 13, 1929, in Oakland, he was the son of the late Karl Frederick and Mabel Leighton Falkenstein Kahl. Mr. Kahl, “K.V.” was a graduate of Potomac State College during which time he married Haseleah S. Kahl. He was drafted into the United States Army after which time, he returned to his formal education in 1957 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, which included a number of courses in structural design. He went to work for the West Virginia Department of Highways, now known as the Department of Transportation. He worked on the thruway, Route US-50, through Clarksburg and the beginning of I-79 before the road had a route number in Fairmont. Most of the construction was bridgework. He became a professional engineer. Mr. Kahl was transferred to Huntington, WV as a construction engineer. The responsibility was mostly overseeing the building and inspection of interstate I-79 from Roane-Braxton County line to near Clarksburg, about seventy miles. He became District Engineer in Weston, which included six counties near the center of the state, and again in Keyser, which included seven counties of the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. While there, he oversaw the move of the new district offices at Burlington, WV. Mr. Kahl ended his years working for the Structures Division in Charleston as a technical and liaison engineer, solving problems that would arise throughout the state in design, construction, and fabrication. He retired in 1988 from the Department of Transportation of West Virginia. Since that time, he had resided in Oakland, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Haseleah S. Kahl. He is survived by many, many loving family and friends who have shared a lot of fond memories with him. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, October 12, 2018, from 10 AM to 12 PM after which time a service will be held. Interment will take place at a later date in the Oakland Cemetery.
