Joy Dale Sweitzer, Sr., 83, of Mtn. Lake Park, residing in Swanton, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 6, 2012. Born on October 16, 1928 in Swanton, he was the son of the late John Columbus and Holma Agnes (Bowser) Sweitzer. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Norma Rae (Friend) Sweitzer in 1990; two daughters, Lois Rae Sweitzer in 1952 and Marsha Lynn Sweitzer Callis in 1996; a grandson, Anthony Friend; four brothers, Raymond Sweitzer, Carl Sweitzer, Harvey Sweitzer, and Gay Sweitzer; and six sisters, Elsie Lee, Eula Kitzmiller, Nellie Nazelrod, Mae Beckman, Jane Madigan, and Emma Wilt. Joy retired from the Garrett County Roads Department after 46 years of service, from 1948 to 1994. He also worked for B&E Construction in the early 1960's and 70's. Joy was an avid hunter, storyteller, mechanic, welder, carpenter and teacher to those who took the time to learn and he loved blue grass music. He is survived by his sweetheart Shirley; his children, Joy "Dale" Sweitzer, Jr. of Mtn. Lake Park, Timothy Sweitzer and wife Carol of Rawlings, Teresa Feather and husband Kenneth of Oakland, Kimberly Bittinger and husband Randel of Hiddenite, NC, Vaughn Sweitzer of Parsonsburg, Carrie Hamilton and husband Russell of Oakland, and Mark Sweitzer and Julie of Gormania, WV; 20 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Steele of LaVale, Jenny Margaret "Dottie" Minichi of McDonald, PA, and Bonnie Lambert of Swanton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland, MD where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM with the Pastor Don Matthews officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
