Joseph D. "Nick" Ernstberger, Jr., 74, of Swanton, died on Thursday, October 12,2017 at Western Maryland Health Systems. Born on February 20, 1943, he was the son of the late Joseph D. and Charlotte (Lewis) Ernstberger. Nick was a graduate of Kenwood High School in Baltimore and of the Maryland State Police Academy where he was first in his class. He served as a lieutenant in the Baltimore County Sherriff office in Towson. Nick grew up on the water where he enjoyed boating, fishing and crabbing with his family. In his later years, he was global traveler who enjoyed cruising to warm destinations, spending time at the casino and playing on his computer. Nick is survived by his bride of 23 years, Sue Ernstberger; a son, Joseph Ernstberger, Sr. and wife Patti of Baltimore; stepchildren, William Murray of Swanton, Joseph Murray and wife Mary of Baltimore and Chris Matthews of Swanton; grandchildren, Joe Ernstberger, Jr. and wife Amber, Ashley Ranocchia and husband Bryan, Melinda Little and husband Dan and Michael Murray, Jr.; great grandchildren, Abigale, Camdyn and Delaney; a sister, Betty Kazmarek; and his cat, Gizzy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Parks. In accordance with Nick's wishes, he will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Uno Pizzeria & Grill, 19814 Garrett Hwy, Oakland at 2:00 PM .
