Joseph Ashby

Joseph Albert Ashby, Sr., of Oakland died on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Health Center in Cumberland. Born on June 20, 1925 in Crellin, he was the son of the late Dorsey and Susan (Meyers) Ashby. He was veteran of the United States Army having served in WWII. He worked for Sanders Motor Freight, Coastal Tank Lines, Pony Express, Harco Lumber, Peters Fuel and was the owner of Ashby and Sons. Joe enjoyed gardening, yard work, meeting with buddies for coffee and playing with Maggie and Louie. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis (Willard) Ashby; children, Shelby Witt of Cumberland, Rayetta Beitzel and husband Bob of Oakland, Joe Ashby, Jr. and wife Diane of Oakland, Willard and wife Billie Jo of Oakland and Susan Hopkins and husband Mike of Hedgesville, WV; grandchildren, Kindra Davis, Wendy Lewis, Scott Beitzel, Marlana Roach, Jamie Ashby, Annie Ross, Katy Roderick, Brittany German, Dustin Slider, Jeanette Bland, Justin and Harmony Hahn, Kandi Ashby, Willard, Krissy and Nickolas Ashby; fifteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and a sister, Caroline Pase of GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Mersing and Rachel Sue Evans; and two brothers, Dorsey Ashby, Jr. and Walter Ashby. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Wednesday, August 21st from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, August 22nd at 10 AM with Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating. A private family interment service, with military honors, will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oakland Volunteer Fired Department, PO Box 43, Oakland, MD 21550 or the Southern Rescue Squad, PO Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.
