John Umstot

John William "Jay Billy" Umstot, 81, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, at the home he built in Oakland, MD surrounded by his beloved family. Jay was born in Cumberland, MD, on January 25, 1944, he was the son of the late Clarence Edward Umstot and Mary Grace (Shirer) Umstot. He was a lifelong resident of Oakland.

Jay graduated from Southern High School in 1962. He attended Potomac State College and West Virginia Institute of Technology, having earned an Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as an Outside Plant Engineer for C&P Telephone Company, Clarksburg, WV, prior to enlisting in the United States Navy. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy where he worked as an Electrician's Mate. He served his country in the Vietnam Conflict, Oct '67 - Oct '68, for which he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for meritorious service. Jay dedicated his life to growing the family business, Shirer's Tin Shop, started by his great great grandfather in 1866. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Oakland, MD, and loved singing in the choir. He had an ornery smile, a generous heart and a great capacity to accept any child or dog who walked into his life.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy Kay (Martin) Umstot; three daughters, Tracy Stoudt and husband Joe, Ann Umstot, and Susan Umstot and husband Tim; seven grandchildren, Katharine, Riley, Maggie, Evan, Lauren, Aziz, and Akinai; three great grandchildren, Scout, Oakley and Ellis; his two siblings, Edward Umstot and wife Jeanie and Christine Mosier and husband Jim; along with several nieces and nephews.

At the family's request, expressions of sympathy may be directed to Hospice of Garrett County or St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Oakland, MD.

Jay wished to be cremated and his family will be holding a celebration of his life in early August.
