John Slawter

John Monterville Slawter, 78, of Aurora, WV passed away March 30, 2014 at his home.

He was born April 3, 1935 in Silver Lake, WV a son of the late Harry and Edna Carol Stemple Slawter. He is survived by his wife, Martha Steiding Slawter, 1 brother, James (Deloris) Slawter, Aurora, WV, 4 nephews, Robert Cumming, Mark (Lisa) Cumming, Michael Slawter, all of Missouri, and Rick Bogges, Keyser, WV, 2 nieces, Michelle (Ray) Poulton, Missouri, and Lanita (Rodney) Neely, Martinsburg, WV along with a host of cousins. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Henry Slawter, and 1 sister-in-law, Diana Slawter.
Mr. Slawter was a veteran who served as a Sgt. of the U.S. Army in Military Intelligence. He worked at Ford Motor Foundry, Cleveland, OH, then as a warehouse supervisor for Island Creek Coal Company, Bayard, WV, and later at Whitetail Mine, Tunnelton, WV. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #71 of Oakland, MD where he was involved with winter and summer Special Olympics games, a life member of 40/8, a life member of Appalachian Beekeepers where he served as president, a life member of Preston County Beekeepers, a member of Maryland and West Virginia Beekeepers Association, and a member of Elks Lodge of Oakland, MD.
Friends will be received Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 1-9 PM at the Aurora Memorial Building. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, April 4, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Regina Beard officiating. Interment will follow in the Aurora Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care Corp. P.O.
