John Hershberger

John Lee Hershberger, Jr., 78, of Blaine, WV died on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home. Born on June 7, 1937 in Kitzmiller, he was the son of the late John Lee, Sr. and Loretta May (Pyle) Hershberger. He was a 1957 graduate of Elk Garden High School who then attended Shepherdstown College. After school, he worked for Pritts Lumber and then gave 38 years of faithful service to Westvaco prior to his retirement on August 1, 1999. A skilled athlete, John played basketball in high school when his team went to the state championship in 1957 and had tried out for a Major League baseball team. Being active in his community, he was a member of the Kitzmiller Fire Department, a member of the Kitzmiller Assembly of God and had served on the Kitzmiller town council. John loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. Out of all the things he loved, it was his love for his wife, children and grandchildren that was most dear to John. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Thelma Jean (Thompson) Hershberger; three sons, Johnny Ray Hershberger and wife Cathy, Todd Allen Hershberger and wife Bronwyn, and Terry Lynn Hershberger; and grandchildren, Justin Hershberger, Bethany Hershberger, Joseph Hershberger, Sarah Hershberger and Madelynn Hershberger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rayleen Michelle Hershberger and a half-sister, Mary Catherine Cook. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 710 Church St., Kitzmiller on Tuesday, March 1st from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, March 2nd at 1 PM with Pastor Matthew A. Paugh officiating. Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery, Elk Garden.
