Joan Johnson

Joan Lown Johnson, of Oakland, MD and Missouri City, TX passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at her home in Texas. Born on September 23, 1945, in Union, SC, she was the daughter of Grace (Farr) Lown of Lexington, SC and the late James Mendel Lown. She was a 1963 graduate of Brookland Cayce High School, Cayce SC. She graduated as the Outstanding Business Student from Columbia Commercial College in 1964 from the Executive Secretarial Program. She retired from the Maryland Higher Education Commission with 25 years of faithful state service on November 1, 2001. While working fulltime at the Commission, she returned to college and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management in1991, graduating Magna Cum Laude. After graduating, she served on the Alumni Association Board and was a member of the President's Club. She served on the Board of the Garrett Mentors Program; was an Honorary Member of the Oakland Rotary Club-MD where she held the position of Secretary for 3 years and was also named a Paul Harris Fellow; was an Associate Member of the Oyster Creek Rotary Club-TX where she was named Rotarian of the Year in 2010-2011; volunteered with Garrett County Historical Society, and the East Ft. Bend Human Needs Ministry (Food Bank), Missouri City, TX. She was active at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Oakland, MD, and Southminster Presbyterian Church, Missouri City, TX. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Martin and husband Larry and two grandchildren, Joshua William Martin and Bethany Grace Martin, all of League City, Texas; one sister, Martha Lown Roof and husband Stacey of Lexington, SC; one brother, Jay Walter Lown and wife Vicki of Due West, SC; and a sister-in-law, Teresa Perkins Lown of Lexington, SC. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Offutt Johnson, in 2013 and a brother, Luther Lee Lown. A memorial service will be held in the Southminster Presbyterian Church, Missouri City, TX on Thursday, October 16th at 11 AM and, locally, in the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Saturday, October 25th at 11 AM with Rev. Pat Kerr officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Garrett Mentors, Inc. program, P.O. Box 725, Oakland, MD 21550.
