Jean Hess Grant, 92, of Sykesville, MD and formerly of Oakland, MD, died on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Fairhaven Assisted Living. Born on February 26, 1926, in Cumberland, MD she was the daughter of the late George Edward and Christine (Schulz) Hess. In 1947, Jean graduated from Potomac State College and became a certified technologist for the American Society of Clinical Pathology. While her husband was attending the Philadelphia Theological Seminary, she worked for three years as a laboratory technician. Jean was a dedicated teacher’s aide for both reading and math at the former Dennett Road Elementary School for twenty years. She, as the Vicar’s wife, resided at the rectory at St. John’s Episcopal Church and was very actively involved in all aspects of the church. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Grant Riddle and Robert Murray of Essex, MD and her extended family, Izydor, Ewa and Emily Hofler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Alexander Grant, in 2012. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2ndSt., Oakland on Tuesday, February 19thfrom 3 to 6 PM. A funeral service will be held in St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday, February 20that 11 AM with Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 126 E Liberty St., Oakland, MD 21550 or St. John’s Episcopal Church, 5234 Maryland Hwy, Deer Park, MD 21550.
