Janet Bernard

Janet Louise "Jan" Bernard, 68, of Swanton, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 10, 2013, in her home surrounded by her family. Born on December 4, 1944 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Alvie Harold and Stella Marie (Rodeheaver) DeWitt . She was a graduate of Northern High School Class of 1963 and was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1963 to 1966. In 1967, she began a lifelong career in the Real Estate Industry. She was a graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI) and had earned the designation of Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), as well as Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR). She was a member of the Maryland Association of Realtors and was an Associate Broker with Long and Foster Realtors and Broker and owner/operator of Property Management Services, McHenry. She was a broker and member of the West Virginia Association of Realtors, as well as a member of the Monongalia County Board of Realtors and a member of the Women's Council of Realtors. Jan was a Long and Foster Real Estate Institute, Instructor, Training and Licensing Instructor and a Biffini Mentor and a member of the Metropolitan Regional Information Systems (MRIS). She was especially pleased to receive the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Garrett County Board of Realtors and the "First Lady of Real Estate Award" from Long and Foster Realtors. She was the first lady Real Estate Broker of the Cumberland Board of Realtors, as well as the first lady Realtor in Garrett County. Jan was instrumental in forming the Garrett County Board of Realtors and Multi-Listing Service and served in various positions, including president several times, chaired Professional Standard Hearings, established the first Board office and hired first Executive Officer, a director along with chairing several committees, and was selected as Realtor of the Year on three different occasions. She served on various committees for the Maryland Association of Realtors in Annapolis. She was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Garrett County Historical Society. She was a member of the Crellin Assembly of God and had served as a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Church Secretary, Leader of Women's Ministry to supply missionary needs and as a Choir member. She loved crocheting, photography, swimming and tennis. Jan was a devout Christian and, being a people person, she never met a stranger. Jan is survived by her husband of 50 years, Harland B. Bernard, the love of her life; three sons, Rodney H. Bernard and wife, Robin, Randy E. Bernard and wife Elisa, all of Oakland; Rory S. Bernard of Swanton; seven grandchildren, Tiffany M. Rounds and husband Adam of Grantsville, Tasha L. Bernard, Mikaela N. Bernard, Brycen R. Bernard, Rylee E. Bernard, all of Oakland, Reagan S. Bernard, Rayce R. Bernard, both of Swanton; one great-grandchild, Lily F. L. Rounds of Grantsville; one brother Andrew W. DeWitt, Elkins, WV; and one niece, who was like a sister, Angie M. Bray of Oakland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, H. Glenn DeWitt and Allan Reed Dewitt; one sister, Freda Marie Austin; and two grandsons, Jonathan Christian Bernard and Noah Rory Bernard. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Saturday, January 12th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 PM and at the Crellin Assembly of God on Sunday, January, 13th from 1 to 2 PM at which time a funeral service will be held with the Rev. James Tedeschi and the Rev. A. Ray Beahm officiating. Private interment will be in the Alexander Lohr Cemetery.
