Jackie Lee Simmons, 73, of Oakland passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife and children on Sunday, September 30, 2012, after a seven month battle with cancer. Born on October 2, 1938 in Canaan Valley, WV, he was the son the late Harry and Mary (Bonner) Simmons. In 1957, Jack moved to Washington DC and, after serving two years in the US Army, married Carolyn (Parks) Simmons on January 3, 1962. They lived most of their married life in Northern Virginia and raised three children, Jacqueline, Kevin and Kirk. Jack was proud to have worked for 42 years for United Airlines. In 2005, Jack and Carolyn retired to Oakland. Jack was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved rooting for the Washington Redskins and watching the WVU Mountaineers. He was an active member of the Bethel United Methodist Church and served as chairperson of the trustees. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn (Parks) Simmons; children, Jacqueline Stickel of Oakland, Kevin Simmons and wife Tina of Sterling, VA, Kirk Simmons and wife Kim of Adel, IA; grandchildren, Aleksander, Jacob, Maryam, William and Brenna. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin and Keith Simmons. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Thursday, October 4th from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 3 PM in the Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Holcomb officiating.
