Hugh Maffett

April 27, 1926 — June 4, 2016

Hugh F. "Jay" Maffett, 90, of Oakland died peacefully at home on June 4, 2016, of natural causes. Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on April 27, 1926, Jay was the son of the late Hugh D. Maffett and Sylvia R. (Fink) Maffett. He was a well-known member of the Garrett County community, greeting most locals at the window of the Oakland Post Office for years with a smile and a wry comment, the humor of which was often grasped as one left the building, or later. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1944 and enlisted in the then Army Air Force, serving in the European occupation. He was honorably discharged and returned home to Oakland to set up the farm business that he continued to enjoy observing and advising his grandchildren about until he died. Jay married Ada Louise Ford, of Cumberland, in October 1953. He became an active member of St Mark's Lutheran Church in Oakland, serving on the Church Council and as its President. In his retirement, he continued to enjoy agriculture, farming and square dancing, as well as spending time with his growing brood of grandchildren. Jay is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Ada (Ford) Maffett; five children, Kristine L. Fay and husband Michael of Fernandina Beach, FL, Wayne J. Maffett of Germantown, MD, Ellen L. Allen and husband EJ of Johnson City, TN, Janet L. Gregory and husband Jeff of Oakland and Carol L. Maffett of Chester, VA; seven grandchildren, Amanda L. Klotz and husband Tim of Friendsville, Justin N. Gregory and wife Lindsey, Jeffrey S. Gregory, Felicia L. Marple, and CJ Marple and wife Melissa, all of Oakland, and Eric J. Allen and James H. Allen of Johnson City, TN; four great grandchildren with a fifth one due in September; his sister, Gloria Lewis and husband Richard of Johnson City, TN; a sister-in-law, Phyllis B. Maffett of Oakland; and eight nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by one brother, William R. Maffett. A memorial service will be held at St Mark's Lutheran Church in Oakland on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 11 AM with Rev. Dr. C. Scott Robinson officiating. Friends will be received at the church prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM and a luncheon will be held in the church social hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Garrett Regional Medical Center Foundation, 251 N 4th St., Oakland, MD 21550; Southern Rescue Squad, PO Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550; or a favorite local charity. The C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland has assisted the family and condolences may be left for the family at www.csfredlockfh.com.
