Howard Lewis

Howard Carlton Lewis, 98, of Oakland died on Monday, April 29, 2013 at Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on April 15, 1915 in Sines, Maryland, he was the son of the late Richard and Grace (Spiker) Lewis. Howard spent his life working outdoors. He began his career with the Civilian Conservation Corps building roads and participated in the construction of Route 219 in Garrett County. He was also a timber cutter. During his golden years, Howard developed a love for quieter indoor activities. He enjoyed watching wrestling on television and playing bingo or checkers. Howard was known as "the checker champ" among friends and family. He is survived by his children, Nadean L. Whitacre and Lensy A. Lewis of Oakland, Howard C. Lewis Jr. of Terra Alta; a brother, Lawrence A. Lewis of Friendsville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Judy M. Lindsay and Alveta J. Whitacre; a son, Alvin R. Lewis; and seven siblings. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. 2nd Street, Oakland on Thursday, May 2 from 12 P.M. to 1 P.M. at which time a funeral and committal service will be held with Pastor Dennis Caton officiating.
