"Together Again"
Helen Elizabeth (Fitzwater) Friend went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 in Mountain Lake Park, MD. Born March 10, 1932 in North Glade to Arthur and Mildred Fitzwater, Helen graduated from Oakland High School in 1949 and married the love of her life, Hugh Andrew Friend in 1951, they were happily married for 52 years. Work took them to many locations from Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and then in 1973 they went on their biggest adventure to live in the New Town of Grande Cache, Alberta, Canada in the Rocky Mountains. In 1976 they moved to Colorado where they had 26 years wonderful years. In every community Helen searched out her church community and joyfully involved herself in teaching Sunday school, singing in choirs and bible study. Helen was a wonderful seamstress, loved to crochet and when she lived in Colorado she took up painting. She enjoyed gardening and preserving. Most of all Helen loved all of her family from far and wide. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Hugh and her son Gary; her parents, Arthur and Mildred Fitzwater; siblings, Douglas Riley, James and Wilda Fitzwater, Melvin Custer and Junior Fitzwater. Left to mourn are her children, Sally Friend Regan (New Castle, Colorado), Judy & Danny Moore (Comox, British Columbia, Canada) , Terry & Sandi Friend (Clifton, Colorado); siblings, Peggy Riley (Waldorf, MD), Eileen Custer (Swanton, MD), Jarlath Fitzwater (Mountain Lake Park, MD), and Ada Jane and Bruce Van Horne (Waldorf, MD); grandchildren, Shannon & Kevin Doherty (Comox, BC), Lindsay Friend and Sam Delbridge (Rock Springs, WY), Keltie and Phil Schalm (Comox, BC), Amy and David Perkins (Clearfield, UT), Tony Friend (Grand Junction, CO) and seven great grandchildren, Aaliyah, Tucker, Theo, Arietty, Bella, Conner and Poppy and numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Helen’s niece, Norma Sisler, for being by her side until the very end. Friends will be received at the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 21, 2019 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at which time a funeral service will be held with Pastor Dennis Leatherman officiating. Interment will take place at the Rose Hill Cemetery in North Glade. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Building Project at Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church, 1005 Broadford Road, Oakland, MD 21550. Arrangements have been entrusted to the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland.
