Hazel Welch

Hazel Irene (Wagner) Welch, 101, of Mt. Lake Park died on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at her home, surrounded by her family. Born on December 9, 1912 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Hilda Mae Wagner. She was a graduate of Mt. Airy High School in Carroll County but lived her entire adult life in Mt. Lake Park. She was a stay-at-home mom and caregiver until her children were in school, then she worked as a nurse's aide at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital until she and her husband retired at the age of 62. They enjoyed traveling and visiting most of the 50 states. She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Ward; a son, W. Porter Welch and wife Marti; seven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Welch and a daughter, JoAnn Brown. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, July 18th from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, July 19th at 10 AM with Pastor Jeffrey V. Zickefoose officiating. Interment will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 701 Baltimore Ave., Mt. Lake Park, MD 21550, Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550 or Meals on Wheels, c/o Garrett County Community Action, 104 E. Center St., Oakland, MD 21550.
