Harry John Edwards, Jr., 99, of Oakland died on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital. Born on August 28, 1914 in Wilson, MD, he was the son of the late Harry John, Sr. and Carrie (Bickle) Edwards. He had worked as a coal miner but spent most of his years, prior to retirement, working as an installation repairman for C&P Telephone. He was proud to have been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp which was initiated by President Roosevelt in the 1930's. He was also a member of the Loch Lynn Church of God, the Knights of Pythias Lodge and the Telephone Pioneers. Mr. Edwards loved spending time with his family and friends and was well known for providing a living history through his wealth of knowledge and love of story-telling. He is survived by a son, Richard E. Edwards, Sr. and wife Kay of Swanton and Florida; a foster daughter, Sandra Denton and husband Lester of Oakland; grandchildren, Kathaleen Skipper and husband John, Teresa Domenick and husband Mark, Clifford Moon and wife Jennifer, Richard Edwards, Jr. and wife Bonnie, all of Oakland, Cynthia Steyer and husband Jerry of Murfreesboro, TN, Ronald Edwards and wife Missy of Rockville, TN, and Nelda Nice and husband Jerry of Martinsburg, WV; sixteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; sisters, Vira Olivito and Grace Adams of Laurel, MD and Dot Snipes and husband Lou of Chesapeake, VA; and several special nephews, nieces and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Kathaleen M. (Davis) Edwards and Virginia (Beal) Edwards; a son, Harry John Edwards, III, in 1964; and nine siblings. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Sunday, May 18th from 1 to 4 PM and at the Loch Lynn Church of God, 8649 Gorman Rd., Loch Lynn, on Monday, May 19th from 10 to 11 AM at which time a funeral service will be held with Pastor Ivan Ackerman officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Loch Lynn Church of God, PO Box 2027, Mt. Lake Park, MD 21550 or the Swanton Community Center, c/o 3282 Swanton Rd., Swanton, MD 21561.
