Harold Ray "Butch" Sharpless, 74, of Oakland died unexpectedly on Monday, June 26, 2017, at his home. Born on March 26, 1943, in Deer Park, he was the son of the late Stanley Ervin and Hazel Virginia (Moreland) Sharpless. He was a 1961 graduate of Southern High School and served for six years in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He had worked for Coca Cola and the National Security Agency as a computer technician from which he retired after thirty years of service. He had attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Deer Park and was a member of American Legion, VFW, NRA and Phoenix Society. In addition to spending time with his family, Butch enjoyed working crossword puzzles, researching various topics on his computer and reading. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Frances M. (Dixon) Sharpless; two sisters, Betty Jean Bullis and husband Delmar of Ft. Pierce, FL and Eleanor Jane Friend and husband Darvin of Oakland; special nephews, Mark and Terri Friend, and Brian and Melody Friend; special great nephews and great niece, Chancellor and Brody Friend, and Julia Alt; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Ann Sharpless and a brother, Ronald Lee Moreland. Friends will be received at the C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Thursday, June 29th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday, June 30th at 10 AM with the Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Deer Park Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the United States Army, American Legion Post #71 and the Deer Park VFW Post #10077. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, PO Box 414, Oakland, MD 21550 or Southern Garrett Rescue Squad, PO Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.
