Glenn Windell

Glenn Franklin Windell, 96, of Terra Alta, WV died on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home in Oakland. Born on June 14, 1917 in Morgantown, WV, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Ada (Gutherie) Windell. He attended Laurel Glen School in Cranesville from 1923-1933 and Terra Alta High School from 1933-1937. From the former Fairmont State Teacher's College, he earned a certification as a 4th and 5th grade teacher. His early work history included positions as a soda jerk in New Kensington, PA and as a machinist for ALCOA Aluminum in Pittsburgh. A veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, in July of 1941, Mr. Windell joined the Aviation Cadet Corps, Parks Air College, St. Louis and completed basic training at Randolph Field in San Antonio. After graduating as a pilot , he was off to Wright-Patterson Air Field in Dayton, OH to test how well a single engine worked in P40 planes. On September 4, 1942, he went overseas on the Queen Mary, landing with the troops in Scotland and flew one of the celebrated B-17 Flying Fortress planes. On his 27th birthday, he met Irene Harrison who lived in Sutton Bridge, England, where he was stationed. They were engaged in December of 1944 and returned to the United States, where they were married on January 29, 1947 at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Oakland. In 1948, they bought a house in Arlington, VA where they lived unitl 1980. During that time, Glenn worked for Thompson's Honor Dairy in Washington DC, becoming one of nine supervisors until the company closed in 1970. After that closure, he worked as a painting contractor until 1980. In 1980, Glenn and Irene moved to Cranesville, where they had previously purchased his late mother's house. This is where they spent the rest of their years together. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Oakland and enjoyed golfing, fishing hunting and flying. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Irene (Harrison) Windell and several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Upon his request, Mr. Windell has been cremated and a memorial service, with military honors, will be held in St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 11 AM with Pastor C. Scott Robinson officiating. Interment will be in the Cranesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 6 S 2nd St., Oakland, MD 21550 or a charity of one's choice. The Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
