Gerald Wine

Gerald “Jerry” Wine, 77, of Oakland, MD passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Born on May 25, 1942, in Warrenton, VA, he was the son of the late Norman and Sara Wine.

Jerry had attended St. Peter’s Catholic School in Oakland, Southern Garrett High School and Catherman’s Business School. Prior to coming back to Oakland, his career was with the Federal Government in Washington, DC where he worked in Contract Negotiations at the General Services Administration. He was a member of the Deer Park VFW Post 10077, Deer Park Sportsman’s Club, Oakland Elks Lodge #2481 and the Oakland American Legion Post 71.

He will be remembered for his many wins and successes and was often referred to as a legend for his athletic accomplishments with Southern Garrett High School where he excelled in basketball, baseball and football. Jerry continued to support Southern Garrett athletics and cheered them on, especially during the basketball team’s recent run at the Maryland State Championship. Jerry loved the NY Yankees, was a diehard Redskins and DC sports fan although he tolerated Pittsburgh sports after moving back to Oakland. He was also a marathon runner who participated in countless races for charity. In addition to sports, Jerry loved dogs having owned many spoiled pets over the years, the outdoors and days spent on Deep Creek Lake with family and friends. He will be fondly remembered as a generous, witty prankster and practical joker who was loving, caring and who considered himself the unluckiest lucky person. He stated that he led a charmed life and was grateful for every moment he had been given.

He is survived by a sister, Catherine (Wine) Certo and his favorite brother-in-law, Francis Certo of Falls Church, VA, and a brother,George Wine and spouse Monika of Beaufort, SC. He was an Uncle and Great Uncle (in both senses of the word) to his nieces, Kimberly Certo, Tonya Stamey and husband Eric, Angela Certo Kiochandra and husband Pai, and great nieces and nephews, Ava, Nathan, Jordan, Kyle and James. He is also survived by his cherished friends, Deborah Frantz and Paul Stadelman, who cared for and loved him until the end; also by his spoiled, beloved dog and companion, Simon, who made Jerry’s days brighter and never left his side.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Denise Wine.

A Celebration of Life for Jerry will be held on Saturday, June 22,2019, from 6 to 9 PM in the Deer Park VFW Post 10077, 4107 Maryland Hwy., Oakland, MD 21550.
