Gerald Friend

Gerald E. Friend, Sr., 72, of Swanton died on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital. Born on April 21, 1941 in Keyser, WV, he was the son of the late Chester and Louise (Howell) Friend. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and had retired from the former Mead Westvaco Company after nearly 32 years of service. He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Swanton and the Swanton Community Center. Gerald greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis (Murphy) Friend; two sons, Chester E. Friend and Gerald E. Friend, Jr.; grandchildren, Michael Haggerty, Destiny Friend, Harlee Friend and Jacob Friend; two great grandchildren, Axel Haggerty and Annabella Grace Haggerty; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dayton Chester Friend and Thomas Richard Friend. Gerald was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Sunday, February 16th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Swanton on Monday, February 17th from 12 Noon to 1 PM at which time a funeral service will be held with Pastor Carl Lee and Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating. Interment will be in the George Cemetery, Swanton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Swanton, c/o Jean Wright, 451 Upper Green Glade Road, Swanton, MD 21561.
