George Edward Rexroad, 90, of Swanton, passed away peacefully at his home on September 3, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on July 10, 1934, he was the son of the late William H. and Martha Mae (Wilt) Rexroad.
George was a graduate of Southern High School. As a young man, following in his father's footsteps, he worked for B&O Railroad as a brakesman for several years. He then started his career working for Westvaco and advanced to a journeyman millwright, retiring after 35 years. He was a faithful member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher for 45 years, on the board of trustees, and the pastor parish relation committee. During the 1985 flood, he worked with the McDowell County Commission. He enjoyed spending time on his farm, woodworking and cabinet making, hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his four children, Barbara Rexroad, Debbie Bolyard, Vickie Bernard and husband Doug, and Kenneth Rexroad and wife Susan; eight grandchildren, Jamie Bolyard and wife Stacy, Scott Bolyard and wife Laura, Lisa Stover and husband Christopher, Sarah Green and husband Eli, Adam Rexroad and wife Megan, Kari Kroll and husband Cody, Bethany Custer and husband Todd, and Kevin Bernard and wife Kelly; and nineteen great-grandchildren, Ryan, Julie, Matthew, Luke, Owen, Weston, Savannah, Leah, Lainey, Jack, Riley, Ethan, Brooklynn, Luke, Liam, Tatianna, Avery, Marshall, and Eden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Freda E. (Gilpin) Rexroad; one grandson, Jeremy Bernard; a son in law, Darrell Bolyard; and a brother, James W. Rexroad.
Friends will be received on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 4 to 8 PM at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. Second St., Oakland. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 1 PM in the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church 3443 Swanton Rd., Swanton, with Pastor Carl Fike and Pastor Vickie Minnick officiating. A private interment service will be held at the George Cemetery.
